Description

A Dedication is a Screendance that is shot with a 360 degrees Camera.

The idea for the video came from the technological aspect of using a 360 degrees camera, which is a camera with 2 lenses of 180 degrees in two sides. The paradox of capturing visual footage in 360, while we as humans can only see around 180 was especially interesting for me. The video footage from both lenses were put next to each other in 2 circles. I like exploring how movement can be captured through different technologies. When it came to the 360 camera, I was intrigued by the illusion of space caused by human figures moving around the camera. Additionally, I wondered how can I use this 360 camera to create a Screendance in a manner that won’t be possible with a “normal” 180 camera? How can it evoke an illusion of 360 space and time?

I decided on a story concept about a relationship of 2 people presented with a surreal view. I wanted to evoke questions like – are they together or not?, is it valuable or just a waste of time?, are they seeing or idealizing another person?
The choreography contains different aspects: daily life positions of the body- like sitting or walking in circles, kitsch romantic dance moves, surreal poses- “waiting” for something. The moves are performed by 2 dancers in synchronicity, as they transition between the 2 circles.
The footage is shot from the room’s center with the 360 degrees camera. The opposing sides of the room are presented next to each other in 2 circles (3D space flattened into 2D). This visual approach creates an illusion of distorted space and time, and brings up the question – are they in the same “room” or not?
